Newsletter NOVEMBER

WELCOME to our November newsletter.

Wow, another season is over. And what a season it was for Newlands. We introduced 7 new junior and 3 adult teams. With all this comes uniforms, team officials, training facilities amongst the excitement of having new people join our club. We also added a fundraising and junior committee to our senior and executive committee. We were able to also supply our coaches with improve training equipment. There will be at least 5 additional teams for our new season. I look around the stadium in awe of our achievements, players in black and white uniform laughing and enjoying themselves. It is a great reward for the many hours a lot of volunteers give so this can happen. We have completed our latest final series. The results are listed below but the words cannot describe how proud I am of all of players, families and members. Well done to everyone. It was great to see so many Newland supporters. TRAINING
There will be changes to our training schedule. We currently conduct training on Mondays and Thursday at

provide back-up support when our volunteer coaches are unavailable. As we grow we need more training
courts, these are not always available. We are enquiring about other options such as outer venues but once
again these are not available when our coaches and players are available. To continue to provide training for

Presidents update

As our teams are preparing for the finals it is now time to step up recruiting for next season. We have entered 2 more under 8 teams and 1 under 10 girls team this coming season. These teams this season were full and we have needed to enter extra teams to allow more court time for the players and the chance for new players to join. The growth in these age groups is due to the fantastic work by the coaches and the programs/culture they have created.

Training will continue for all teams during the finals. The courts are available and it is a good opportunity to work on improvements. I am also inviting and expected new players to come along with the view of joining next season.

We will have some new coaches at the same time trying to recruit more. If you are interested please see me.
The adult teams are also entering their respective finals with all teams very competitive. This again is the time to register your interest in playing adult basketball on Tuesday nights for Newlands as we plan to enter extra teams next season. Please see Daphne if you are interested. We would love to have you join and no experience is required.

Good luck to all teams in finals, play with pride, have fun and continue the Newlands culture of respecting and treating all as equals.

Your President

Presidents Update

President update
Time again to give you an update on our club's status.

First I wish to thank and acknowledge the work that Lana contributed to our girls program. It was a sad moment yesterday when she informed me that due to work commitments she could no longer coach her girls team. I did not have the opportunity to thank her as no sooner had she told me and I needed to address other issues. I first met Lana in a coaching course we were doing. Identifying her talents I tried to convince her to join Newlands but true to her character she chose to stay with the club she was then with. I was excited when she later joined us because I knew she was the person who could build our girl's program. Our girls program is very strong at the moment, we have an enormous amount of girls playing for us. We now have several girl's team coaches working with Liz to build our club. But to Lana I give a big thank you, you will be missed and we hope that you continue to play in our ladies team and stay a member of the Newlands Basketball Club.

With Lana's resignation I am looking for a replacement coach. I will not rush in and appoint the first person. I need to get a coach that will suit the ability and personality of the girls. I am also looking for more coaches for next season. We will have positions available in our younger age groups. I plan to enter 4 under 8 teams next season. Currently we have 2 teams that I coach with Belinda and Daphne's assistance. But we need another 3 coaches. There may be other teams that require coaches also. Our growth is enormous as are the opportunities we are providing. Not everyone is cut out to coach, the work can be hard at time but the rewards are very satisfying.

You should now be preparing for our finals. They are just around the corner. Good luck to you all. Our success in the past has been very good. Last year half of our teams played in the grand finals. Overall a third of our teams won their grand finals. I don't know if we can match those results this season but enjoy yourselves and any thing can happen.

This season we have focused on our building our girls & under 8s teams while starting adult teams. The adults teams paly on a Tuesday night providing opportunities for parents, coaches, friends and some of our older juniors. After a slow start all 3 teams are doing well. The ladies are on top of their ladder while both men's team had strong wins last week.

We are a young club and our growth is exciting. We are way beyond where we thought we would be when we started the club. We are one of the biggest club at Coburg and growing. Keep up the good work. I am extremely proud of each of you. We have a lot of new players watching our games and coming to training. Remember to be good role models as you never know when or who is watching.

There is more I could and most likely should add but I will save it for our next newsletter.

Enjoy the day

Your President
Wilton McDonald

Newsletter - July

WELCOME to our July newsletter.
It is another time of the year where we welcome new families to the club and our teams are exciting playing in the new season.  So read on and find out what makes Newlands the good club it is. My answer is its people.

SAFETY
The safety of our players comes first.  Recently and in the winter months there was and may be condensation from the roof on the courts in the early games.  This does not always happen but may happen as the cold weather sets in. We will not put our player’s safety at risk and will not play games if the courts are unsafe to do so.  This may inconvenient people but I would rather upset people than have a child injured.  This direction has been forwarded to all coaches. If games are called off under these circumstances for this please understand and support the reasoning behind our decision.

TEAMS
In the last newsletter I stated that we had good growth and had entered 19 junior teams and 2 adults’ teams for this season.  This has changed.  The latest update is 22 junior teams and 3 adult teams. I have attached a growth chart to show these results.  It is something to get excited about.

Our new teams are: Under 8 Leopards, Under 10 boys Colts, Under 12 girls Pandas are now 2 teams Wolves and Pumas, Under 16 girls Tigers, Under 16 boys Titans, Under 20 boys Crocs, Ladies adult Chicks. Men’s adult Blokes and All Stars. We also have new coaches and team manager and thank them for their willingness to help us provide opportunities for members of our community to enjoy basketball at our wonderful club.

NEW PLAYERS
We have positions available in most teams and are always looking to bring new players into our club.  The only teams that are full are our under 18 boys and adults teams. There are immediate positions available in all other age groups.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE
We conducted a sausage sizzle at Masters Hardware in Preston on the Saturday the 22nd of June.  Thank you to the following people who assisted as well as continuing their normal game day duties.  So it is a big thank you to organiser Liz Nichols and helpers Debbie White, Trish Mikhail, Lucia Tamis, Cathy Gatt, Di Christensen, Oscar Menuel, Pat Di Lizio, Julia Palantzis and Rebecca Nichols.  A further thank you to Pat for the donation of the sliced onions.
We will be running more in the future and look forward to having more helpers available. The funds raised are much needed and assist with the running of our club.

Fundraising is a highly important part of running our club.  We do rely on these funds greatly.  We are looking for volunteers to join our new to be formed fundraising committee. I have spoke with some people about this and the response was good.  We have a lot of talented people with some very good ideas. This is your opportunity to help this great club of ours.
A meeting is planned for 6 pm on the 22nd of July at the Coburg Basketball Stadium office.  Hope to see you there.

Fundraising - we need your help!

Hi Team

We need your help. Fundraising is a key aspect of our club.  As we become bigger we need more funds and people to assist.  We cannot continue to rely on the same people all the time to do so much.

I am organising a fundraising committee and have planned a meeting on Monday 22/7/13 at the Coburg Basketball Stadium office @ 6 pm.

I would like to invite parents and friends of our club to come along.  I am certain that we have a lot of talented people with time to assist and some wonderful ideas waiting to be asked. These people may not be interested in team management but could help in this area.  It is ideal if Liz and I could also step back and assist rather than manage the committee.  Perhaps some of you might be able to do this or assist with ideas, help organise a fundraising activity

Remember this date and lets try and fill that that room!

Have a enjoyable weekend

Wilton

Team Update Lightning & Colts - plus a thanks to all helpers!

Hi Team

Firstly a big thank you to all who did a double shift at the basketball and the sausage sizzle.
Not sure who or how much but to each of you thank you.  Another exceptional effort by some exceptional people.

This, off course does not exclude those who were at the basketball helping due to the absence of the sausage sizzle volunteers and our regular hard working coaches and team managers.
I collected all the team sheets and will get a copy to you.

Please remember that any player who did not sign will need to complete the back of the scoresheet on the first game they play as a new player with full details.

Our under 10 boys have grown beyond one team and I have more boys thinking about joining.  I have needed to enter a second team 'Newlands Colts'.  I am hoping to arrange for their first game to be on returning from holidays. I am looking for a coach and team manager for this team.  If you know of possible coaches please see me. Training will be at 4pm on Mondays at the stadium.  The under 10 boys will stay as they are until the 13th of July.  That is no change until the 13th.

The 2 teams will be:

Lightning
Duncan
Aidan
Gabe
Harper
Rohan
Hamish
2 more players needed

Colts
Khalid
Sean
Nicholas
Xavier
Oscar
Available new players

With 6 and 5 in the 2 teams and heading into Winter we will need to get more players so please keep an eye out for more.

Regards
Wilton

Game Venues - Team Sheets

Hi Everyone,

Please note the following:
1. Coburg Senior High (ALVA GVE ,Coburg) is now being used as a 6th court.  This has been used in the past and only new players will not be familiar with its location.  Please make sure to ask your team manager or coach if you don't know the way.  It will be used more as the competition continues to expand..
2. Team Managers: The team sheets must be in to me no later than next Monday.  We will be receiving a fine if there are not in on the following Saturday and I need to have them prior to make sure that are club records are also up to date.  This stops errors in the future with players ages, addresses and singlet numbers.
3. We need players for under 12 boys, under 14 girls and under 8s.  These teams are short of players although under 8s will have enough for this week, I'm looking at making another team.

If you need assistance with any of the above please contact me and I will do my best to assist.

Regards

Newsletter April 2013

Around Our Club
WELCOME to our April newsletter.
Hope you all enjoyed the Easter and school holidays. The season is winding up and all our teams are now preparing for the coming finals. Recently I was reminded about the growth in our club and the amount of people at training. I took time to reflect this as I have been making enquiries about hiring another venue for training as we have out grown the number of courts available at the stadium on Mondays. Next season we plan on entering 17 teams and must be able to provide training facilities for them. On reflecting I remembered when we first started training, it was with 3 players on half of court 4 on a Tuesday afternoon. So we have gone from 3 players at training to what we have now. Wow, what a reflection. Have a look around you next time you are at training and appreciate the hard work of every member of our club, you all should be proud of our achievements. Please remember that our success is not measured by the number of premiership but the number of players who turn up each week.
Good luck to all our teams for the upcoming finals. Go Newlands, we are all proud of each and every person associated with our wonderful club.

CHOCOLATE DRIVE
Our chocolate drive has been a success although we have some boxes remaining and some people still to return their money. Please see Vivian at training if you wish to return chocolate money or take another box. The winner of the competition will be announced when all boxes are sold.
COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Positions are still available on both the Junior and Senior committees. Meetings are conducted monthly on Monday after training. Come along and learn more about our club please remember that it is your club as well. Come along and help direct this great club because it belongs to all of us including you. You are challenged with the responsibility of ensuring our club remains the best. Please see myself or Liz for further details about these
positions.
